Indonesia's foreign policy under General Suharto has been one of non-alignment (it became NAM chairman in 1992), tempered by the need to retain good relations with the West.
Foreign policy concerns include a continuing suspicion of China, despite the restoration of diplomatic ties in 1990. Indonesia has resolved its differences over the Timor Gap boundary with Australia, and relations have generally improved.
Internationally, the government is coming under pressure, particularly from the USA, to improve its human rights record.
